Evaluation of Chickering Grand Piano owned
by Cathy Miranker. Serial number 230009
This is a 5'9" grand piano built in 1970.
Structurally, the case, soundboard, bridge,
bench, pedals and action are in good
condition.
The sides of the body of the piano's finish
are also in good condition. The lid has
suffered some sun damage and checking as has
the fall board.
There are 2 noticible scratches on the lid.
The strings both plain and wound (bass
strings) are corroded. The action is
consistent in touch throughout it's range.
While there is no evidence that the action
has ever been regulated, still, the playing
feel of the action is good. Throughout the
range of the keyboard, the tone of the piano
is excellent even though it appears the
original hammers, now 40 years old, still
reside in the action. There is little
grooving in the hammers suggesting little or
light playing in its life span.
The estimate for this piano based
realistically on used piano markets today is
between $4000 and $5000. I would recommend
this as a good practice piano for a
professional musician or composer or an
excellent student instrument. In any case,
an excellent value.
